About Discovery Yacht Charters

Discovery Yacht Charters started as a charter operation on Georgian Bay. For years, we put people on boats and sent them out into the 30,000 Islands with charts, provisions, and whatever advice we could fit into a dock briefing. We knew the harbours, the anchorages, the weather patterns, and the places worth stopping. We also knew which channels to avoid at low water and which marinas had the best fuel prices.

The charter business has changed and we have moved on from active operations. But the knowledge stuck around, and it seemed like a waste to let it sit. So Discovery Yacht Charters became what it probably should have been all along: an editorial guide to cruising and harbour life on the Great Lakes.

What We Cover

We write about the things we actually know. Chartering for people who are considering it for the first time or want to understand how it works on freshwater. Cruising routes for people planning their own trips on Georgian Bay, the North Channel, or the Lake Huron shore. And harbour towns for anyone who wants to know what is waiting at the end of a day on the water.

We are not trying to cover every lake in Ontario or compete with the big boating publications. Our focus is Georgian Bay and the connected waters of Lake Huron, because that is what we know best. When we write about a harbour, it is because we have been in it. When we describe an approach, it is because we have made it.

How We Write

Straight and practical. We are not a luxury travel site and we are not trying to sell you anything. If a marina has shallow approach depths, we will say so. If a town is better for provisioning than for sightseeing, we will say that too. The goal is to give you information you can actually use when you are planning a trip or standing in a cockpit wondering where to go next.

If you are new to the Great Lakes and want a place to start, the charter basics and cruising guides will get you oriented. If you already know these waters, you might still find a harbour or a route you have not tried yet. Either way, fair winds.
